DENTAL TREATMENTS
To reduce deep gum pockets
If your gum disease is very severe, you may be in need of gum recontouring to eliminate deep, hard to clean areas. This may help you keep your teeth for far longer. The removal of inflamed tissue and root surface calculus promotes healthy tissue regeneration.
Surgical treatment is only needed in more severe cases of periodontal disease that do not respond adequately to initial non-surgical therapy and we are experienced in knowing when this approach is needed. Most procedures are performed with local anaesthetic and sometimes with the use of conscious sedation if you feel worried.
The objectives are to eliminate deep gum pockets and to regenerate tissue, while providing an environment in your mouth that’s more conducive to oral hygiene.
To increase the height of teeth ‘crown lengthening’
When teeth lack the necessary height to place a dental crown, your dentist may suggest a procedure called crown lengthening. This entails comfortably removing some gum in order to create a taller tooth, capable of supporting a crown. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and after several months the gum has healed to a stable shape and the tooth may be crowned.
Crown lengthening can make the difference between keeping a tooth or having to take it out, and not all dentists can offer this treatment, therefore we are privileged to be offering it at VIDA.
Recession
Sometimes you will find it easier if a VIDA dentist reshapes your gum to allow you easier access around teeth and roots which have suffered recession. This can be managed with gentle periodontal surgery, a new cleaning regime and root sensitivity treatments. Your VIDA dentist and hygienist will be able to help and advise on your suitability for these treatments.
Gum disease is caused by the germs (bacteria) that live in your mouth. In fact, germs live in every mouth but some people are just more prone to gum disease or have more severe gum disease than others. For some, there are specific causes of gum disease such as diabetes and smoking.
The bacteria stick to your teeth, irritate the gums and make them bleed. Gum disease can eventually destroy the gum and bone that support your teeth. Over time, gums recede making teeth appear longer and more aged. Diminishing bone may allow teeth to loosen, or they may even have to be removed.
The VIDA team is only too happy to help educate and treat all aspects of gum disease and periodontal disease. Our team designs a bespoke care plan and works with you to reduce any risk factors you have for this disease so that you experience fewer problems. Even if you are very susceptible to gum disease, it may still be possible to maintain good oral health and have teeth and gums which look and feel healthy.
Often patients lose the confidence to see a dentist because a dentist has not seen them for a very long time. Faced with unsightly gums and concerns about dental work, it becomes more difficult to make an appointment with a dentist for fear of hearing the worst. Our VIDA direct access hygienist will gently improve your situation and help put you back into an effective homecare routine. A visit to the dentist is unlikely to feel as intimidating when your mouth feels and looks fresher and healthier!
We will remove the calculus (tartar) caused by bacteria from above the gum line by scaling (cleaning) the teeth. We also remove the bacteria, loose gum tissue and calculus from under the gum. This involves the use of fine tipped, powered or hand operated cleaning instruments. At VIDA we offer you a choice of instruments, as you may prefer the feel of one technique to the other. We use local anaesthetic to ensure the treatment is comfortable and we use anaesthetic gel before injections to ensure the most comfortable experience.
In some forms of gum disease it may be necessary to take a course of antibiotics after treatment.
